Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium (CMC-Na) also called sodium CMC, is a kind of ionic salt cellulose derivative soluble in water, prepared by alkalization, etherification, neutralization and washing process. It has a white or off white nearly particle powder in appearance with some typical features that are pseudoplastic, bio-compatible, cold and hot water soluble, acid, alkali and salt durable, thixotropic, and moisture absorbed. The higher is degree of substitution of carboxymethyl group, the easier is soluble in polar organic solvents. CMC-Na can form the gel as dissolved in water but the fiercely mixing will turn it into liquid state. The solution viscosity of CMC-Na relies on its pH value which is 6-8 to give the high viscous property to CMC.
